Scripture: 2 Peter 2:19 NIV84 “They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity–for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.”

Observation: Peter is on a mission to show new Christians the importance and need to live according to their calling rather than to the world’s desires and their old sinful and evil ways.  (2 Pet 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.) After making the plea for them to live according to their calling, he then refers them to the dangers of their old way of life… namely the BONDAGE they were in to sin.

Application: How many times have we seen in our lives people who are really “stuck” in the things that they once thought would bring them freedom?  Rachelle just attended a parenting seminar talking about the problem that occurs when teens want to explore their new found freedom and they do so to dangerous extremes.  I saw it when I was in college. And I’ve seen it so many times since – people caught in the trap of drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, etc.  The flesh will always entice us to believe that by satisfying its lusts, we will be free.  Yet God tells us through His Word, that to be truly free we must not gratify the desires of the sinful flesh, but instead walk according to the Spirit.  That is where true freedom is found!

Prayer: Lord, help me to put aside the temptations of the world and the desires of my flesh.  In You, Dear Lord, alone will I find true freedom.  Thank you for freeing me from my bondage to sin, death and the devil!  Amen.
