If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. – 1 John 1:9

“IF” … a little word that can spark big fear!

  • “IF only….”
  • “I don’t know IF I’ve done enough …”
  • “will God forgive me IF I’ve committed this or that kind of sin …”

But there is a better way to view this little word, rather than to see it as something like the spin of a roulette wheel.  When the Bible tells us “If we confess …”  it’s not attempting to place fear and doubt in our mind, but rather to let us know how far and wide and deep and long is the Love of God and His grace!

In other words, the Bible is telling us that there are no sins that God won’t forgive … and there is no time when God won’t forgive.  The relationship is simple and direct … if you confess … God *will* forgive!  Always and every time … because He is faithful and just … He will do it.

So perhaps a more comforting way to read this verse is simply “WHEN you confess, God is faithful and just and WILL forgive your sins and purify you from all unrighteousness!”

Thanks be to God for His indescribable Gift!
